Pulled pork is a staple dish in states like South Carolina. It is made from a bone-in pork shoulder roast that is slow roasted in an outdoor barbecue, crock pot or oven for up to 12 hours. Once done, the pork is pulled and flavored with a barbecue sauce made from dark molasses or brown sugar, cayenne peppers, red pepper flakes and apple cider vinegar before being served on brioche buns.

A popular Southern food dessert recipe is buttermilk chess pie. The filling is made from buttermilk, vanilla extract, butter, eggs, and white flour. It is blended over low heat to make a pudding, which is then put in a pie shell and baked.
